Eggbase developed their unique egg and poultry carbon footprint tool to enable the calculation of a carbon footprint for individual pullet, egg layer and broiler flocks. This carbon footprint tool is embedded into the Eggsense web platform to enable farmers to run end of flock footprints themselves from data already being entered for compliance purposes and from data supplied under NDA to Eggbase by their feed supplier. This is an excellent example of collaboration maximising the ability of data to inform decisions, especially when the Eggbase carbon footprint calculator is used as a scenario planner.
We are very proud that the Eggbase carbon footprint calculator has been chosen by Stonegate Farmers to calculate the environmental impact of egg production for their carbon neutral Respectful Egg brand, chosen by Morrisons to demonstrate the carbon neutral status of their Planet Friendly Eggs brand, given visibility to packing stations of their supply chain scope 3 emissions, and chosen to plan carbon neutral egg products and supply chain carbon footprint reduction strategies.
After a rigorous and detailed analysis, the UK Centre for Industrial Sustainability at the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Manufacturing concluded that all the assumptions, boundaries, databases, emission factors and methodology used by the Eggbase carbon footprinting tool were correct for calculating the carbon impact of 1 kg of eggs from different farms and flocks, corresponding to a cradle to farm gate system. Eggbase is obviously delighted at this independent endorsement of the accuracy and reliability of its egg and poultry specific carbon footprint calculator.
