The purpose of the Eggbase Carbon Calculator is clear – to measure poultry farm emissions using a comprehensive and specifically developed, independently verified method.
Expanding mandatory and voluntary emissions reporting requirements mean that more and more farms are now completing regular footprints, with many others providing data along the supply chain to support market-driven reporting initiatives.
In their 2024 report, DEFRA identified over 80 carbon calculators in use across the agriculture sector, and highlighted substantial divergence in methodology and completeness in only the six shortlisted tools.
Variability in calculator ‘purpose’, methodology, primary data quality, reliance on secondary data or simply the users’ appetite to wholeheartedly complete the process all lead to results that can be, at best, difficult to derive value from. At worst, meaningless.
