Independent reports into the divergence or harmonisation of footprint tools have previously highlighted that embedded emissions of imported livestock is a potential area of inconsistency. A new harmonised approach developed by Cool Farm, Agrecalc, Farm Carbon Toolkit (and us!) helps change this.
Although the Eggbase Carbon Calculator has incorporated embedded emissions of chicks, pullets or poults since the beginning, the revision of the subject in a community of helpful and supportive carbon accounting experts has been invaluable.
This work supports the communal aim of improving the comparability of livestock footprints across the whole farming sector. In turn, this can improve farmer confidence in calculated estimations, supporting overall participation in emissions reporting and, perhaps most importantly, the decisions or investments necessary to deliver sustainable mitigation strategies.
